Salimbayan: dance for wellness
Salimbayan, which literally means to simultaneously glide or swoop, is an exploratory endeavor in harnessing indigenous music and dance to espouse the physical, emotional and social well-being of the UP Diliman community—faculty, staff, students and alumni. It aims to offer the UP community an alternative avenue to be physically, emotionally and socially fit to face the daily challenges of campus life.
This project highlights the pangalay dance movements, a pre-colonial indigenous dance from the Sulu Archipelago. Traditional musical accompaniment will be used as well as music from various genres. Each session will be guided by trained dance instructors using the Amilbangsa Instruction Method (AIM). This will cover limbering and concentration exercises as well as basic pangalay postures and gestures.
The project will be facilitated by the AlunAlun Dance Circle (ADC) led by pangalay dance style researcher and conservationist Ligaya Fernando-Amilbangsa. ADC has been in the forefront of conserving and popularizing pangalay dance style in almost two decades; bringing pangalay in local and international scenes. ADC has also endeavored to use pangalay dance style among Filipino youth coming from difficult circumstances which resulted to positive outcomes through the National Commission on Culture and the Arts program grants.
* The project is headed by the Department of Anthropology with the support of the Office of the Chancellor and the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy, University of the Philippines, Diliman.
