PhD Anthropology Program


The graduate program is designed to ensure a solid foundation and grounding in the field of anthropology for degrees leading to a Master of Arts in Anthropology and a Doctor of Philosophy in Anthropology. The students will focus on their specific areas of research and specialization upon completion of the core courses. It is expected that a student’s research be based on data generated from fieldwork.

The doctoral program is designed to ensure the solid foundation and grounding in the field of anthropology. The student begins to focus on their specific areas of research and specialization upon completion of the core courses. A doctoral student must complete thirty six (36) units of coursework and obtain a weighted average of 1.75 or better to qualify for the comprehensive examination. After passing the Ph.D. Qualifying Examination, a student is considered a doctoral candidate. The student then enrolls twelve (12) units for the Anthro 400 – Dissertation. A student has six (6) years to complete the program.

Curriculum Requirement of Ph.D. in Anthropology (with MA Anthropology)

  • 15 units of Core Course
  • Preparatory to Comprehensive Examination
  • 3 units of Research Design and Methods
  • 18 units of Specialization
  • 12 units of Dissertation

The cycle of core courses for the 1st Semester shall be as follows:

  • Anthro 292 (Anthropological Theory)
  • Anthro 270 (Linguistic Anthropology)
  • Anthro 224 (World Ethnography)

The cycle of core courses for the 2nd Semester shall be as follows:

  • Anthro 202 (Physical Anthropology)
  • Anthro 212 (World Archaeology)
  • Anthro 297 (Research Design and Methods)
